15 year kid just blew everyone away with the coolest whips! Ryan Adler with 5 ramp sessions ever!

Ryan Adler was told to stop whipping when he’s racing Motocross.

It turns out he found his calling at KING of the WHIP!

With not many years racing, Ryan has really twisted the throttle to become one of the fastest guys on a motocross bike but also throwing some of the coolest looking whips from a 125cc 2stroke and then jumping onto a 250 4 banger.

And having only 4 or 5 sessions even jumping a ramp, Ryan got used to 75ft without any issues at all!

Trying to get a name like Dirco van der Westerhuizen out in one go was impossible. I was struggling hard with the South African names and Jacques decided to help out with the pronounciation!If you have ever listened to the 12th Man series which is an absolute piss-take of the Australian Channel 9 commentary team across Cricket mainly and other sports, the long running gag was trying to say Pakistani, New Zealander names for example. And I had the same feeling like I was Bill Lawry trying to talk to Tony Greig with the doyen of cricket commenatry, Richie Benaud blasting me.Anyway, after all of that, I caught up with one of South Africa’s FMX young guns, Jacques Human to see how he felt bringing new tricks to Montecasino in Johannesburg and if the wind was going to be a factor in throwing down for King of the Whip.

Becoming South Africa's top FMX rider with Dallan Goldman from King of the Whip 2022

After finally meeting Dallan after so many years, it was great to grab a quick 5 minute chat with him before he was about to throw down at King of the Whip and see if he could stand on top of the box at the end of the night.

During our chat though, I was surprised when he dropped the bombshell that he was considering quitting FMX because of the backflip monkey on his back. And this is no joke. The backflip has ended the career of many riders. Of guys who couldn’t land it. And worse, those who crashed out badly. No one will know how hard it is until they deal with this themselves and really look at how dangerous it is.

And what is great, after putting in all of the work and backing himself, Dallan has been rewarded with being South Africa’s number 1 FMX rider and being invited to some of the coolest events like KING of the Whip.

The entire show blew me away and I was also very pumped to host the show for 2022 at Montecasino!

Any pressure on the defending KING of the Whip 1 hour before competition? with Scotty Billett

Less than one hour before the King of the Whip was about to go down, I grabbed a few quick chats with the riders to see how they were dealing with the pressure.

And no one had more pressure than the reigning King of the Whip, Scotty Billet.

It had been 3 years since the previous round of competition, and with X Games Gold Medallist Julien Vanstippen flying in, he knew he had some work to do to stay on top of the box.

As you can hear in this chat, Scotty really wasn’t too stressed at all coming into the comp. He was just waiting for a screw to come loose and to send it as big as he could!

Julien Vanstippen is KING of the Whip 2022 + X Games Gold medallist!

We have been so used to watching the same old riders being shuffled out to a Best Whip competition at X Games since about 2010. It has been so hard for any young guys to get a foot in the door to try prove themselves against so many medal winners and contenders from Jeremy ‘Twitch’ Stenberg, Ricky Carmichael, Jarryd McNeil, Tom Parsons, Edgar Torronteras, Josh Sheehan, Genki ‘Wanky’ Watanabe etc.

So when this new kid from Belgium got his shot at X Games Japan and snuck his way onto his first podium in 3rd place at his first X Games appearance, we knew there was more to this story than just one event and we’ll never see him again.

X Games at Axell Hodges’ home compound provided the best ramp for JVS to show his skills, with that huge whip over the 120ft ramp where he just obliterated everyone elses whips that came before. Taking the X Games Gold Medal was a no-brainer, and the invitations he received to ride at Red Bull Imagination was all but secured, even for a Monster Energy rider.

And we finally caught up with Julien down in South Africa at the unique King of the Whip competition held at Montecasino in Johannesburg where he was crowned King in front of a screaming 5,000 strong crowd to take it out at the 4th ever event.

This interview was held a couple of days later when we were trying to recover from the after party and had checked out some of the sights of Africa with a Safari as well.

Best Trick Live Companion – Triple Flips landed in FMX Competition at Nitro World Games 2022. RLP x Clint Esposito Show

Nitro World Games 2022 produced the craziest Best Trick event we have seen since Travis Pastrana landed the Double Flip in 2006 X Games.

This time around, it would be not one, but two riders who would create FMX Competition history with Jayo Archer and Harry Bink going head to head to land the Triple Backflip for the first time in a comp.

Not to mention, we had the mystery surrounding Clinton Moore whose name appeared out of nowhere and could produce a plethora of the world’s biggest tricks to steal the thunder from the Triple Flip.

Throw into the mix, the man who landed the first ever Triple Flip in 2015 at Travis Pastrana’s house on a Wooden death trap, Josh Sheehan and a ragtag bunch of riders will to risk it all with Jayden South, Scott Fitzgerald (TopDog) and Adam Jones!

The 2022 Red Bull Imagination competition went even bigger compared to the previous years! Tyler Bereman and co built upon the past 2 years courses to produce something special and the crowning glory was Tyler sacking up and sending this huge 180 feet transfer jump which blew everyone’s minds!

Lost in the Jungle! Short clip from Crazy Action Sports Stories

All I could see in my mind, was a newspaper headline saying “Idiot Australian lost in Indonesia Jungle”

What started as a disaster on my first ever FMX Tour of Indonesia, turned into a really cool opportunity to go riding in the jungle to the top of a volcano with Sheeny and Clinton Moore. And then almost back to disaster again!

This is a short clip from when I joined Clint Esposito’s new segment, Crazy Action Sports Stories for the Two Wheels to Freedom channel.

This week we’ve got one of the top 110 riders in the world with us right now, but don’t go sticking him in that box. This dude is talented on anything with 2 or 4 wheels and has an engine. Keeping it old school and preferring it to be a 2 stroke!

From Motocross to Supercross, Rally, Side by Sides, 110s, BMX or whatever he can get his hands on, Banks Hovey appears to be part of the next generation of riders hellbent on having fun above all else and it shows in every video I’ve watched.

I love watching his no stuffing around approach to rolling in and just hitting any jump put in front of him.

If you haven’t heard of him yet, well you must not have been listening to any of the last 12 months of podcasts, but he’s cut his teeth riding 110s on the big stage of X Games and ended up with the Silver Medal at this years event at Axell Hodges’ house, and only beaten to the top spot by Axell himself. But very quickly we’ve seen him riding some of the biggest events like Nitro Circus Live Tours and watching him smash the Next Gen ramp or Moon Booter. Ramps that aren’t to be sneezed at. And then you get an impression of how fast he’s coming along on his progress in FMX. But like I said, there’s no Box you can put Banks in, he’s just taking on everything and having fun along the way.

Adelberg creates history at X Games 2022 with Frontie to Frontie – Full Review of Moto X

History has been made in X Games Moto this year with Jacko Strong landing the first ever 110ft Front Flip, before Rob Adelberg bested it with the first ever Front Flip to Front Flip in a line (Next Gen ramp into 110ft ramp) to blow everyone’s mind.

Guillem Navas broke the Quarter Pipe Highest Air record on his first jump of the competition but by the end of the comp, Colby Raha set a new record of 49 feet 0 inches!

And Julien Vanstippen just unleashed one of the biggest whips we’ve ever seen on a 110ft ramp by going completely upside down, inside out and back to front!

X Games is still delivering huge moments in FMX history, and we go into who was invited, who wasn’t. Who won. Who lost. Who crashed their brains out and who created history.

Freestyle of Nations 2022 wrap-up

NIGHT of the JUMPs returned for 2022 with the Freestyle of Nations in Munich and Cologne with almost back to back events after a couple of years in Covid-19 limbo and we wrap-up both events with this short, sharp podcast!

Firstly we cover Munich with the World Team vs Team Czech vs Team France. Huge crashes, some controversial decisions I thought, but one hell of a return for the season.

And the second event held in Cologne just last weekend was between Team Germany vs Spain vs Italy. And with some of the best riders having only 2 hours sleep, they still threw down like you would have never known!

Find out how Luc Ackermann managed to smash into the wall in Munich, Maxime Gregoire returning to try land the Nac-Flair which he crashed out on in Basel in 2021. David Rinaldo on fire and filling in for Germany for some reason?! Kai Haase returning to competition after his AMA SX training crash in the USA with a Front Flip with absolutely no training. Marc Pinyol getting back on the bike after being heavily concussed only a few days before competition.

Robbie Maddison – Face your fears. Live your dreams!

James Bond’s stunt man and one of the greatest action sports athletes of all time has joined to talk all things FMX. But the spotlight isn’t on Robbie Maddison, the man who has broken so many World Records, but actually his young 11 year old son, Kruz Maddison.

Kruz recently performed in his first ever FMX show at Freestyle Kings in Australia, and even better, he got to ride the show with his famous old man.

We find out how it must have felt for Maddo to watch his son ride his first show, and also delve into just what it was like doing those huge Red Bull No Limits new years eve jumps, or riding in huge blockbuster movies as Daniel Craig’s motorcycle specialist stunt man, or as Vin Diesel’s stunt man as Xander Cage.

But the biggest surprise came towards the end of the interview and I am personally just stoked to hear Maddo is still reaching for his ultimate dream. So you’ll have to stick around to hear him talk about what it means for him to achieve it.

One of the most naturally skilled dirt bike riders on the planet, Kai didn’t waste his time with Covid blues and sitting on his ass waiting for FMX to come back, instead he went about competing last year in everything from Flat Track to Downhill MTB, Motocross, Hard Enduro and Speedway. But taking on the biggest Supercross series takes a whole other level of dedication and Germany’s 30 year old FMX star took it on like an absolute champion!

Events are coming back! Freestyle of Nations returns w/ Pinyol & Huppert

To say it feels incredible to see events happening again would be an understatement. To hear the cheering of the ecstatic Swiss crowd at NIGHT of the JUMPs in September was unbelievable and to witness the elation from the actual FMX and MTB riders who threw down on the night was even more impressive.

It was an emotional event, with some riders doing their first event back since Covid-19 cut short the 2020 season after only one event.

With 3 teams going head to head, Germany vs France vs Spain at the Swiss border city of Basel, it was unreal to see the big names of FMX competing together in a team and taking on their arch-rivals.

But really, this one event signalled something else. This was the return of events coming back. While we’re not full gas and doing events everywhere around the world yet, it sets a precedent of how events can be handled in a Covid-19 safe way and hope to see more in the very near future!

We wrap up the event, the scores and answer the question of why a Czech rider ended up on the German team.

NIGHT of the JUMPs is back with the first competition after the Lockdown and they are bringing a new format to Switzerland for the first time, the Freestyle of Nations!

We preview the first FMX competition on European soil with some legends joining me on this special episode to talk about the three teams going head to head, with Team Germany vs. France vs. Spain.

And some legends of the sport will be there, and also joined for this preview episode.

Team France’s David Rinaldo is the 2013 World Champion and 2019 X Games Best Trick Gold medallist!
Team Spain’s Edgar Torronteras is the OG and Legend of FMX! He started the sport, before it was even a sport! And he has X Games Gold!
Team Germany’s Kai Haase who is the genuine all-rounder on two wheels, competing in every discipline he can! And the Nose-Bonk Front Flip innovator.

Freestyle of Nations is a different concept of FMX, bringing together 3 riders per team to throw down in a variety of disciplines to find out who is the best Freestyle Motocrossing country in the world.

Edgar Torronteras – I have no filter

What was planned for a quick 5 minute voice message for the X Games review series, turned into a full blown interview with the legend of Freestyle Motocross, a man who epitomised the sport, before it was even ‘a thing’. We talk with none other than ET, Edgar Torronteras.

Of course there was plenty to talk about with this years X Games being completely different, at Axell Hodges’ Slayground due to Covid-19 restrictions, but having been declined an invite to compete in the Best Whip competition, which he already has a Gold Medal in, Edgar explained the story behind it all, and I quickly understood why 5 minutes wasn’t enough to capture everything.

Bananaface as he’s affectionately known, was already wowing crowds with tricks at motocross and supercross events in the early 90’s before the term FMX was even thrown around.

Now into his 40s, Edgar is still one of the world’s biggest names and is continually throwing down some of the biggest whips, turn downs and turn ups.

He missed his shot in 2021, can he make his return to X Games in 2022?

Quarter Pipe: X Games 2021 Review 6/6

Beating Axell Hodges on his home turf, Colby Raha broke the X Games record for Quarter Pipe Highest Air by sending his Husky 40 feet 9 inches to claim the Gold Medal in the 2021 competition, relegating Axell to a Silver medal.

Unfortunately, Corey Creed who held the previous record only one inch lower at 40’8″, was knocked out of competition, literally when he crashed the day before in practise. Suffering a severe concussion and broken hand, Creed wasn’t able to back up his unbeatable performance on QP recently and had to let the other guys have a shot at it.

There was plenty of drama before the event when the invite list came out, with Kohl Denney and Guillem Navas missing their shots. Only it was lucky for Denney, 2 days before the comp, he received his last minute invite and he near on secured a Bronze medal, until Tyler Bereman went for glory on his last attempt to sneak the Bronze away.

This episode I am joined by more riders than ever before on this mini-series of X Games reviews and I’m stoked to have some legends take time out of their day to give their opinion including the man who should have been there and competing, Guillem Navas (or @navaspetit823 on Instagram!). Joining Guillem is his older brother, el Presidente Antonio Navas, FMX Legends Edgar Torronteras and Javier Villegas, Moto Comedian Clint Esposito, Weekend warriors Kevin Peterson, Andy Christie and FMX_Grizz and former X Games and X-Fighters Judge, Jose Gaspar.

Best Trick: X Games 2021 Review 5/6

It’s time for the big one! Best Trick is the event we wait for every year to see what everyone has been working on, and after last years hiatus, I think it’s fair to assume everyone was really looking forward to this event since the guys had effectively 2 years to hone their tricks!

And it looked like only David Rinaldo was willing to bring something completely new to the game with his new body varial, called the Bobby Spin, which is dedicated to his friend Francky Bataille.

But it was Rob Adelberg’s No Handed Front Flip which won the competition, with David taking silver and Harry Bink in 3rd spot with his new Double Backflip 1 Hand Nac.

Very controversial it would seem, and we have 8 different opinions in this episode and I can’t thank the guys for joining enough because this was harder to pick than a dirty nose! Thanks Clint Esposito, Antonio Navas, Javier Villegas Andy Christie, FMX_Grizz, Kevin Peterson, DannyDwayne416

X Games 2021 110s : Review 4/6

X Games unveiled an all new moto discipline this year with the 110’s or Mini Bikes, or Pit bikes.. or whatever you want to call them!

I thought it would have been pit-bike racing but it turned out to be a full freestyle run and Axell Hodges took the win on his home turf over a field of some big name Moto and BMX riders.

I’m not going to lie, I didn’t really know what to expect and… I thought it was going to get some pretty harsh reviews. But you’ll have to listen in to this episode to find out what everyone thought.

Actually we have a very special guest for this episode, one of the riders who competed in the very first 110s event at X Games with a late notice invite, Banks Hovey! Banks was pumped on the invite, but he had huge problems with trying to fly from the East to West coast of the US to even ride his bike and some issues with TSA. And he’ll go in-depth on the whole course and judging as well.

Also joining to talk about what went down are some regulars now: Antonio Navas, Javier Villegas, Andy Christie, FMX Grizz and Dani_FMX.

X Games 2021 Best Whip : Review 3/6

The motocross discipline which measures style over anything else, returned to X Games 2021 with Best Whip and there was a huge shake-up in the results with surprise eliminations and a very deserving winner!

Tom Parsons brought the heat with some of the biggest whips ever done on a dirt bike, and he took the win over Wanky (Genki Watanabe) who has some of the best Turn Down whips as well.

The only problem is, you’re comparing apples and oranges. Speaking of apples, the Apple Farmer from Donnybrook, Josh Sheehan missed out on the Final 4 even after throwing some huge whips and a favourite for the event with more Gold Medals in Best Whip than anyone else, Jarryd McNeil also didn’t make the cut for the final which was a huge shock!

We cover all of that, plus the new course featuring a Double-Double line and then choices of ramps on the second jump, the invites (and riders who weren’t invited), the judging and everything else to do with Best Whip this year.

Joining us again for this episode is the man from Team Lleides, Antonio Navas, as well as one of Australia’s brightest stars for Best Whip in particular and a guy I think deserves a shot at X Games Best Whip next year, Tyler Wakeford who gives really good insights into each of the styles of whip including the traditional Seat Bounce Racer whip, Turn Downs and Turn Ups. Returning with the fan evaluation is FMX old timer who still gives it a red hot go, Andy Christie, FMX Grizz from the UK and a new voice from one of our listeners from the Podcast, Dani_FMX.

Rounding out this episode, we have again the legend of Freestyle Motocross, one of the true pioneers of the sport and another guy who missed an invite for 2021, Edgar Torronteras. Edgar has won Gold in X Games Best Whip, he’s been on the podium a handful of times, yet still missed a shot this year.

X Games 2021 FMX : Review 2/6

X Games Freestyle Moto is one of the most important and longest running motocross discipline in the ESPN stables. In 2021, it didn’t disappoint and there was so much going on, that it gave us plenty to talk about here!

From the difficult course bugging out most riders, the judging, the crashes and even what time everyone must have had to wake up to even ride this event!

From Luc’s incredible win, to Sheeny’s impressive run, Adelberg’s mistake that cost him potentially a win and David Rinaldo landing an all new trick! Bink and Benny Richards took dirt samples and couldn’t finish and Taka was perfect like always and Jacko made some big mistakes which we didn’t expect! X Games had it all!!!

We’re joined again by X Games Gold Medallist in Freestyle 2007, Adam Jones who knows more about this event than almost anyone else in the world!

el Presidente Antonio Navas returns with his views on the competition, plus Chris ‘Rocket’ Rose as a track builder to talk about the difficult course and Jose Gaspar as a former X Games judge to highlight points the judges would have been looking for.

We have even more fan interaction with FMX Grizz returning, and joined by an old FMX friend of mine, Andy Christie who isn’t scared to ride ramps on a CR500 if given the chance. X Games 2021 Moto Review 1/6: Overall Impression & Results

The first major international FMX competition for 2021 is done and dusted, and there is a lot to talk about with this unique X Games event! So much so, we will break it down into each discipline and bring in plenty of riders to give their opinion on the olympics of Action Sports.

This episode, we look at the overall impression of the event, with a new look X Games, to have each discipline outside of a major stadium and hosted at Riders Compounds was a huge side-step for ESPN. But the made-for-TV event was still able to run, and after a 1 year hiatus, it was awesome to have X Games back in any format.

We go through everything from the difficult FMX Course, the judging, rider invites and those who weren’t invited, last minute changes, new ramps, new disciplines, new location, new riders, crowds and expectation vs reality.

In this episode, I am joined by former X Games Gold Medallists, Adam Jones and Edgar Torronteras, FMX Fact Checker Jamie Squibb, el Presidente Antonio Navas and we bring in some fan interaction with FMX Grizz to give their opinions on the event.

Nate Adams won everything there is to win in Freestyle Motocross, and at the same time he was focused 100% on FMX progression, he began a glove-only brand called Deft Family which was revolutionary at the time.

We catch up with ‘The Destroyer’ to find out how he was able to continue to be the man to beat at the top of his sport, while learning all new skills in business, marketing, logistics and trying to get the feel out of his glove that he had striven for in the beginning.

Nate was in a special position to create gloves that even his fellow FMX competitors and friends all appreciated, having guys like Twitch, Taka Higashino, Jeremy McGrath and Travis Pastrana riding in gloves he had designed, it was the perfect launching pad on top of his own persona, to build a brand.

Jason Ryan – Rewriting FMX and BMX history!

Jason Ryan is currently producing one hell of a documentary called “Out of the Loop : The Jose Yanez Documentary” which will re-write Action Sports history, detailing the story of the first ever back flip on a motorcycle which was landed by BMX Pro rider, Jose Yanez in 1991.

If you haven’t heard the name Jose Yanez before, you’re like most of us who had not either. 9 years before Carey Hart launched his CR250 upside down at Gravity Games, Jose had already landed a motorcycle flip on his RM80 with very little recognition at all.

The reason this all came about, was the Riders Lounge Podcast interview with Jarryd McNeil (https://ridersloungepodcast.podlink.to/jarrydmcneil) where he blew my mind with footage of Jose, and the fact that neither of us had never seen it.

That’s where the award winning filmmaker, Jason Ryan, comes in!

This new movie shows how the BMX legend who landed the first ever Backflip on a BMX bike, then went and landed it on a motorcycle. And how the BMX media and FMX media for that matter, haven’t really recognised either achievements.

And there’s even more! Jose Yanez even attempted something crazier in 1983 before all of this started and you’ll find all about that in this interview!

As one of Australia’s best Freestyle Motocross exports, and with many more years left up his sleeve, I think you’re about to get an insight into the mind of someone who’s on the edge of FMX greatness.

While he has had some big wins like at the Nitro World Games a couple of years ago, and having a trick list longer than your arm and certainly more than he can fill his bar pad with, Pat unfortunately has some bad luck has come his way on more than one occasion, but the true sign of a champion is getting back up and carrying on. And it seems like nothing is really getting in Pat’s way on his path to the top.

Or wherever his path may lead him.

It turns out there’s a lot more to Pat Bowden than you may know. If this is the first Riders Lounge Podcast episode you’ve tuned in to, then you may be surprised to hear that actually Pat designed the logo for the Podcast before the first episode.

Buckle up! This is one rip snorter of a Riders Lounge Podcast interview with one of Australia’s greatest motocross exports who has completely taken the disciplines of Best Whip and Step-Up to new levels and he is clearly not scared to call a spade a bloody shovel.

Actually today, you’re going to be educated on the history of Freestyle Motocross.

As the intro goes… the first ever backflip on a dirt bike was not actually done by Carey Hart.

I am like 99.9999% of you who definitely followed the narrative of early 2000s FMX that Carey Hart at least attempted it first (and I guess the industry is divided on who actually LANDED it first between Hart and Caleb Wyatt who rode away) and while I heard rumours way back in the day that someone else had tried it, I didn’t believe it until I saw it. 20 years later… here we are.

Jarryd actually blew me away during the middle of this Podcast – I had no idea and I wasn’t really going to believe him until he sent me through a video showing it. So that completely came out of the blue and I didn’t expect in this interview but I’ll upload the video and you can see for yourself.

But the real reason I wanted to catch up with Jarryd was to talk about moving dirt. I don’t think I have seen another rider so passionate about machines, excavators, skid steers, dozers, loaders, dumpers or anything else that can move tonnes of dirt and make jumps.

But if you had known about the two people that did it before him would it be different. You know what I mean? like way different and just crazy to think the people that have done that trip before I just never had any recognition for what they had done And they were the First people ever to backflip. You’re going to be educated on the history of freestyle motocross. As the story goes with. Jarryd McNeil the first. FMX, where Carey Hart and lease was the first person to attempt a backflip. And i guess. The industry is divided on who actually landed. The first backflip was it Carey Hart or was a Caleb Wyatt who right why now while i heard back then the rumors the back in the days someone else had actually done it. I didn’t believe it. Until i saw it and i never did see it. Twenty years later. Jarryd actually blew me away during the middle of this podcast. I had no idea. And i was really not going to believe him until he sent through a video showing it which he did so that completely came out of the blue. And i didn’t expect this interview to go that way. But I’ll upload the vdi yourself but the real reason. I got Jarryd McNeil on for this interview was all learn to talk about. I wanna talk about moving. To and I don’t think i’ve seen any other ride. So passionate about machines excavated skewed these doses load as donna’s or anything else that can just move tons of dirt and make jams a sword in the flesh when he flew in for a couple of days before dirt dig is back in two thousand and nineteen and he basically spent all of his time working on the jumps with us at that event and not even bothering to get over the jet lag or putting his bike together he just asked machine. Can i use. And he just helped us build the competition us because we really wanted to go over and beyond and build something that had never been put into freestyle motocross into a free ride competition. And Jarryd helped us make that happen and actually Jarryd input at the last minute also helped in creating history at that event. But we’ll talk about that. A little bit lighter now before we kick off a do want to thank my partners who have helped to make this rod as lange. I mean it was like you know. Don’t really get to rob with him very often. At all nominee many people get decided. I rode with the grass This is actually the second time. I rode with my rub with his ranch down in like san diego area. A few years. Back for Rising but those no ramps or anything they where we could kinda lock really session down with a bunch of rod. Those things being thrown around with We should do try and with mcgrath Everyone should do a knack train and we would other to him in austin. Hey would you be down to hit the seventy five ramp with us and do some knack trains and that somebody can tell me in just to get the eggs enron ramping awhile and is the display. Frankie my buddy richie Now there’s some there’s some big heavy hitters viki man to think of the forgotten some but yeah there was a law Tom parsons Yeah forget tom. Who had the biggest mack nack. Then before we move on biggest now of course it was national. I mean honestly as far as the biggest goes like. It’s side because like i would say tom. Parsons probably has one of the cool. Enacts fischel i mean honestly like is to hook my foot on the shifted to do knickknacks back in the day until i like started figuring out like the the pivot on you peg. One is to look at tom. Passan’s his knack next. mike. I’ll just wanna do and like tom dozen because he would like to whip the blackout and wyatt kind of flat and then he liked hangs offered like low luck. That was funny like just to see somebody that can do. The biggest flip tricks in the world do knickknack and he was struggling. So you know. We had a variety of different knack next as pretty sick. When you see the trying you can actually just like sit back and look at all the different styles. ’cause like nearly everyone is a little bit different yuna that’s that’s hilarious. Yeah you’ve got guys who had just thrown the biggest staff and then the most basic trick the first one you’ll learn and that crazy isn’t that guys like if you asked me to. Do a cane can lock. Honestly like if i go ahead and try cancan. I’ll have to do one handed. Like it’s like i have to do that. One handed cancan. Because it’s like my foot and the area like having to cut down seat in being super short doesn’t help so lack the movement like it just sucks to be able to like not be able to do the most basic trick sometimes like the can being short just Quite hard like for me. A double kane is why asia and yes look it taka. It’s like he can’t do a knack nak but he can do a double neck. It’s like you kinda econo- like miss those those like basic little tricks and just move on so fast and so quick until i just the big stuff n we sometimes find that that stops easier as you notes. Just just wants to come off the peg anyway. So it’s like amazon. Do double can you know you are asking for trouble magic. You’ve hit a false neutral when you do. I did that on everything you know. My dad handed whips are hooped. Must’ve been My style one-handed knack neck like that. That song that we do That’s hooped gay. When i flipped when i do not handed flips like click third i used to hold second flips off the live but holding on your foot like the pressure when you pull back just like yanks on the on the shifter Lot harder and it kinda makes you flip a little crooked now just flip and then click the gear and then take my hands off but like the whole foot hook on your shift to thing is it is a bit weird but other something i’ve done for so long you know like the travis pastrana recline like a one foot of recliner thing too lazy thing. It’s like that’s hooked with the shifter’s while i never actually hooked on the gala a knob i. I have the foot. Yeah off and one. I had to like ida breakdown. Pull it up. sorry. I got my fingers like riding close to the The salt and you like who. I have one of them off got one of them off. Kenny bought from back in the day. One of the original Is a temperatures dude. The makes them all said. Yeah it was about that. Said he I have one of his original ones had back in the day. Actually i think i gave it to pull smith so that’d be that’d be on his on his block somewhere wherever that black win but Yeah it was. A a foot hooked. You did the same thing and had blocked a little bit of a cable. Coming out of the top with the little pace on wasn’t piece of metal that was bolted to it. And you just pulled up on a yet. I would pretty good on. I wanted to get one. But then i got mine off a jose. He was mike on down in spain and yet work pretty good. And i mean that was enough for me actually speaking of hoax Since we’re already on the whole knickknacks and everything like that. One of my favorite tricks of watching people do it by doing it. Myself was the like the obstacle yet reverse of you call it like way you whip but then you whip up to turn down with the nack nack. Yeah and and. I love that one. But i found so i got a foot hoop from hanis ackerman to learn seat. Grab flip spot. It’s a hook on the brake lever. So you type like the little thing off. Yeah put this little hook on. And so i need grab lips with a and i remember that hollis had the like because i to hang out with hanis a fair bit. He’s like my favorite. Like i wanted to and just because of that guy. He’s like my favorite gym at six. I remember exactly. I think his head like a little bit of grip type on the nathan. Maybe -actly that’s along like a flat one with a group type on. Yeah it’s super ugly. Body gets the job done and i use the seagrams flips. And then i found to do the op nak was i could do it like i just hooked in and i could swing as hot as i wanted but you’ll do l. Egg yes okay exactly so under your left and then putting your gear shift to foot over exactly yeah opposite but can you do a knack neck. The other why not do so. I only in one direction. I can’t whip the other way to save myself. But no i even if we’re doing like little transfers to the right i can’t do it like the back of your block goes out to the rot crannies always event. And then you kick over that way too but then but that’s that’s for an op neck.

But if do not yet went onto a normal regular nights like yours you. You’re saying if you do a normal neck you do at the other side. None like normal. Knickknack is the only noble fight off with using your rot foot out of the black. Yeah yeah yep so. They don’t do your opposite up. Nak is opposite. Why exactly yeah you can do neck both save up knack all turned down to the rot and still take and still take my normal neck foot off. Does that make sense. So my knickknack am i up. Neck are still use the same foot rod. Naw darn opposite the yeah. We ate On on never learned to whip the other way. I tried and tried. And i just i don are my brain conduit my body conduit our water is just i still try like i still try the motorcross tracks like if i can learn to whip the other way that’ll be my goal until the mafikeng. Somebody’s going to teach me. Because i’ve written for a long time in ridden with a lot of people are still haven’t worked at abbott bigger. I think you’ll figure it out. Thirty what am i now. Thirty seven this year. I haven’t figured it out yet. What’s your team like. I don’t like do it off for me. they feel different opposite whips. But then it’s like. I don’t know like turn downs. Fill different both ways. But i can do both ways. Whips can do both ways I have a favorite side and a not so favorite saw but not opposite side. I try and still do the same exact movements as if i was doing Like literally copy does movements if that made sense like yeah like i just i just try and mirror them. Basically i’ve tried to mirror them of almost crashed. Every gonna get onto this. I’m gonna look like Jarryd McNeil. With the biggest mining truck load is all the way down to a skid steer excavator and we moved three thousand tons of basically built a track from dead scratch and from that we may Basically i would be out there with twelve other operators operating but the crowd doesn’t know they know what we’re building but not out there and Basically come back from building the course pull out the back. Jump on my block and come flying out into the track and yeah put it put on a show for him and those of the coolest thing ever to be able to operate a pace of equipment in a show and then go out and actually show the crowd. And i’ve got some news for you. It doesn’t appear to be fake news. Like i said i had heard rumors years and years and years ago about this but i never saw the footage and so it slipped to the back of my mind will probably be more truthful. I just forgot about it so here we go. This is the storyline that i have found so far the first rider to ever do the back. Flip on a motorcycle and landed it android away was jose yon is in nineteen ninety-one it was on an ram eighty and not only. Did he do it and land it. He built a full set up out of wood to make it happen. So the takeoff and landing ole built out of timber. Our mulch saying not even loose dirt. Adc this time it was the honda cr eighty and he did a whole bunch of them. Apparently it wasn’t just the one off them. There was even a photo of someone airing out of. Bmx pipe on an abc. Which i think koby rah upload back in two thousand and nineteen and now it’s starting to make sense. It was a yellow adc. So i don’t know if it was jose janas from the suzuki. He was riding although many people on that. Were commenting that maybe it was. Actually bob call so. I’m not sure that one’s a little blurry at the moment then of course it wasn’t until the year two thousand at gravity games way carry hot went ford on a two fifty full-sized by that we will not. And then there are the two sides of whether he landed or not as he gather orientation but he washed on impact. So where does that leave. Everything in the history books was Carey. Hart mealy the first person to attempt it in a proper competition. Do you believe that landed or do you say he crashed it on. Impact was caleb wyatt than the first person to land a backflip on a full sized bike because he right away from it. It kind of doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things bought. It’s definitely an interesting point in the evolution of not just f- mex- action sports or motocross but for someone to backflip. A motorcycle in general is still so damn nali so you might be saying to yourself. This is also but why the hell did anything about this. That aren’t but what Carey Hart did. Gravity games two thousand is still one of the most iconic things i’ve ever seen.

I still to this day. Get goosebumps when. I’ll watch that video. I have goosebumps talking about it now and it actually it propelled sport into the stratosphere from that point. But i did find that. A guy named jason ryan is actually working on a documentary based on the first guy to land the motorcycle backflip jose janas and he created an indie gogo and a gofundme page. And it looks like they’re fairway off their target of what they need to produce a video but perhaps they make it in the near future but the youtube videos looked awesome. And that’s just them talking about the funding for movie which would be titled out of the loop the movie itself. I’m sure would be an epic watch and definitely something to be added to a history of all action sports and motorcycling. Jose yon is apparently still riding his sixty years old still back flipping. Bmx by the look of the videos. I soul from jason ryan. Javier Villegas – A one year break…

I feel like Covid-19 has been the rehearsal for a lot of athletes, in any sport, to show them what their lives will look like after they make the decision to retire.

And like most athletes, who find out they’re good at something at a young age, they have been focused on that one particular sport their entire lives to become – the best. You can’t be the best, and be studying full time, or working a 9-5 job, unless you’re just incredibly naturally gifted.

So here we are, 1 year on since the last major event, and Javier Villegas is one of many riders who has found himself wondering what in the world he’s going to do until we can all go back to doing what we want with freedom of travel, riding dirt bikes and having fun!

Thanks to Javier for being so open and candid about what this major change to life is like, and I’m looking forward to catching up again at the next events!

Jayo Archer – Chasing the Triple

Jayo Archer is on the toughest journey in Freestyle Motocross, working on the Triple Backflip!

You may or may not have heard much about Jayo. He’s kept a fairly low profile, which is surprising for the things he has achieved already so far!

From building his own ramp to try the Triple, the adjustments, trying to work out the exit angles where the ramp is almost vertical, looking for more height out of the jump, different gaps and anything else that will help get the Triple Flip sorted on a much smaller ramp than what Sheeny landed it on 5 years ago.

Being taught by Cam Sinclair as a youngster, invited to work on the Triple Backflip at Travis Pastrana’s house, landing the Double Backflip in a competition on a borrowed bike (not even the same brand!) and doing it all while still working a normal job with up to 12 hours a day in Civil Construction!

Jayo has some huge plans, so let’s see if we can extract some of those plans out of him in this interview and see what he’s up too. But I think you’ll agree after listening to this interview with one of Australia’s brightest stars, that the “low-profile” will probably be a thing of the past soon enough.

Fred Kyrillos – Newly crowned 5-time Brazilian FMX Champ!

Hi and welcome to the Riders Lounge Podcast, I’m Steve Sommerfeld your host for today’s online chat with another of Freestyle Motocross’ top riders and who has actually just picked up his 5th Brazilian FMX Championship, all the way from Sao Paolo in Brazil, it’s Fred Kyrillos.

While we still are in a holding pattern of no events, I’m stoked Fred was able to put the tools down and jump on for a chat to talk about the latest competition, how it felt to ride in the middle of Covid without a crowd and to stand on top of the box again, in a country with such a deep pool of talent in FMX.

When I look at Brazil’s Freestyle Motocross scene, it still feels a lot like when I was riding in Australia. There are a lot of guys, a lot of old guys, a lot of new guys always coming through and it’s good to see they are still putting on a national competition every year, and even having some international flavour thrown into the mix!

I’m sure as most of the followers of this podcast, you’re already following FMX pretty closely and would know Fred, but if you might not have heard of the name, he’s been in almost every single event going around at one point in time. From NIGHT of the JUMPs to X Games, Red Bull X-Fighters, Nitro World Games and anything in between.

He’s one of those guys who has learned a lot from the big events, and brought that knowledge back to Brazil to help push not just himself but everyone around him and to continue building the sport there.

Matt Buyten – B-10 has enough Gold Medals to sink a ship!

Matt Buyten needs specific weight training on his neck muscles simply to stand up straight with the huge haul of X Games Gold, Silver and Bronze medals he’s picked up over the years in Moto Step Up.

Even though the X Games website says he has 7 medals – in fact, he has 12 medals from all of the X Games events! See, sometimes the internet can get things wrong.

But competing against the biggest names from Tommy ‘Tomcat’ Clowers to Ronnie Renner, Ricky Carmichael, Jeremy McGrath, Travis Pastrana, Brian Deegan, Twitch and taking gold medals over the lot!

One of the nicest guys in the sport, he was in the crowd with most of the NVHC crew like Dustin Miller and Mike Mason watching as Travis Pastrana jumped into the San Francisco Bay (and received a massive fine for his antics!) to becoming an X Games Gold medallist, FMX legend over 20 years and also getting into Monster Trucks.

Holding a record probably no other person on earth can claim, the only person to back flip a Motocross Bike and a Monster Truck!

Strap yourself in for a really cool interview with B-10 and I do have to say sorry for the technical problems we encountered on this one. After doing the interview not once, but twice, the internet and USB port malfunctions were a pain in the backside, but I think you won’t be able to notice too much!

Seb Westberg – DIRTBIKE VS. STREETBIKE Interview

Before having millions of YouTube views like today, Sebastian Westberg had a meteoric rise to the top echelons of FMX after winning the chance to ride at Red Bull X-Fighters as the first “Novillero” with a Fan Vote in 2016 in Madrid, Spain.

But one day before the event, he broke his leg in the foam pit training on a Flair 540! Somehow he slipped his foot into his boot and competed and made a name for himself in the famous Plaza de Toros Las Ventas bullfighting ring! Since then, Seb has spent so much time creating his annual YouTube viral videos with fellow Finnish stunt rider, Niko Säkkinen on the Road Bike!

The latest edition is out now, simply called DIRTBIKE VS. STREETBIKE 4.0 and is already going viral.

Levi Sherwood – Why chase trophies you already have?

Undoubtedly one of the greatest ever Freestyle Motocross riders, Levi Sherwood stunned the FMX world when he won at his first ever appearance of the 2009 Red Bull X-Fighters event in Mexico City.

Levi then stunned the world when he retired from competition only 10 years later in 2019, at the age of 28, when he was seemingly at the peak of his career.

After a huge 2017 season, winning everything from X Games Gold in Freestyle MX and Best Trick, Nitro World Games and Red Bull X-Fighters, no one would have predicted Levi’s retirement. Is it a coincidence that Levi’s final X-Fighters was also the final ever X-Fighters!?

You probably already know almost everything about the Rubber Kid from New Zealand, so in this episode, we go into the process of retirement but more importantly his next step into engineering with CNC, Titanium and of course what he’s becoming so known for on social media, his Carbon Fibre work and creating his new projects. Motorcycle Manufacturer’s and Factory Race Teams spend millions and millions of dollars every year on development. And Levi Sherwood, a one-man-band has modified his KTM 250sx to weigh in only at 89.5 kilograms wet (ready to ride, with fuel/oils/fluids!)

We cover almost everything, from Dirt Bike geometry, how a proper BMX 360 could be pulled, but maybe destroying FMX at the same time. Also the work going into creating potentially a new Standard in Freestyle MX Ramp Production, and of course, his thoughts on what happened to Clinton Moore at X Games and that Next Gen crash.

Where is Freestyle Motocross going? November 2020 News Wrap-up!

There has been so much going on since the last FMX news update, my head has been spinning! And I’m really stoked on the future of the sport, even if there is plenty of doom and gloom going around at the moment.

It sucks that as riders, there are no events, it sucks as fans that we have to wait another year to see our favourite riders come to a town near us. There are of course, many more problems in the world.

Jeremy 'Fungi' Furniss – Surfing, FMX, Tattoos

Fungi as I have always known him as, was one of the elder statesmen of the Australian Freestyle Motocross movement! Jeremy Furniss broke out from the WA scene and was featured in the early FreeriderMX Magazines where of course most of us found out about anyone back in the old days and he had quite a good career riding FMX shows.

The combo-king grew up at a pretty incredible surfing spot where he actually met some younger famous names such as Kelly Slater and Rob Machado and it was this chance meeting which potentially changed his direction in life. Watching these greats surfing his local spot and making a living out of having fun, saw Fungi look at possibilities within Freestyle Motocross.

Taking his passion from riding FMX to then organising events and ultimately one of the biggest competitions in Australia, Fungi has now moved into Tattooing and taking that same focus and drive into his new career which is absolutely booming.

Jeremy has personally helped me out in my early years of riding FMX competitions and even lending me his KTM250sx to ride some of the comps and shows and I will also remember that generosity.

Corey Creed – X Games Gold Medal Stunt Driving Freerider

With the X Games Real Moto 2020 series all wrapped up, I caught up with one of the contestants who in my mind, had the best looking video I’ve seen out of every season so far! The production value was unbeatable.

Corey Creed together with filmmaker Allan Hardy created their own Hollywood Stunt Driver version of a Real Moto video, with Corey Creed probably better in line to pick up an Oscars award, for his acting in this clip. It seemed like everything went wrong from the moment he was invited to create a clip, but the whole team created magic and we find out the good and bad parts of it all.

Proving that you don’t need to follow the same well beaten path to success that others take, Corey has come from left-field to be in the spotlight right now in the disciplines of Quarter Pipe and Best Whip.

With his moto career trajectory shooting to the moon at the moment, it was great to find out exactly how Corey made his way from Stunt Performing in China to learning new driving skills at Movie World in Germany, transferring to Movie World in Australia and then picking up a bunch of Gold Medals at X Games and setting a World Record for Moto Quarter Pipe at Nitro World Games.

Doug Parsons – All the stuff you didn't know!

One of the pioneers of Freestyle Motocross, Doug Parsons has not only helped push the sport through his riding prowess and time in the hills.

But Parsons was an integral part in evolving the sport with the first ever Quarter Pipe build which is now a huge draw card for X Games at the moment. However, building ramps is only a small part of the story.

Doug Parsons was behind the huge ‘Ride to the Hills’ video competition series in the early 2000’s and has even picked up an EMMY Award, for his work on the 2016 FMX Documentary Film, Unchained. As a kid, coming home from school and having the biggest names in Motocross and Supercross just parked in his back yard and riding in Reche Canyon, Parsons has been involved in MX/SX/FMX pretty much his entire life.

I tried not to fan-boi this one too much, as I have grown up watching Parsons and it was definitely cool to get his take on the sport from the start until now. There is so much gold in this episode, you won’t want to stop, just like me!

Massimo Bianconcini – Italian Stallion stepping it up!

After his 2nd or 3rd coffee for the morning and while relaxing before riding at Petr Pilat’s jam in the Czech Republic, I caught up with the Italian Stallion, Massimo Bianconcini who has been around the traps for so long in FMX and at 41 years of age, is still going hard!

Having spent most of his career battling at the NIGHT of the JUMPs World Championships, it was after talking with Libor Podmol that would change the direction of Massimo’s career into Step Up, and with that came 5 World Championships at NOTJ and 3 medals at X games with 1 Silver and 2 Bronze!

Hannes Ackermann – A man of few words

One of Germany’s best riders, Hannes has had some huge ups and downs through injury. Not one to shy away from trying massive tricks in the foam pit, I wanted to see what it takes for him to take these new tricks from Foam to Dirt and how to then put it all into one run and win a World Championship round.

We didn’t have much time to get this interview done, the wind is always hard to negotiate at his home compound and also dealing with Germany’s strict times of when you can practise. But I would like to think, we covered a fair bit of territory in a short amount of time.

Clint Esposito – The Moto Comedian
