Triple Backflip landed in FMX Competition for first time!

It’s not possible.

After watching Josh Sheehan stomp one of the gnarliest things ever seen on a dirt bike, the Triple Flip at Travis Pastrana’s house on the biggest ramp set up we’ve seen in FMX, the typical catch cry was – we’ll never see that landed on a regular set up, not to mention in competition.

We’ve heard it all before, but one thing I think you set your watch too… finding gnarly rippers who are willing to push physics and their body to new limits.

Enter 2022 and it’s down to two guys. Jayo Archer and Harry Bink who are pushing to land the Triple Flip in FMX Competition.

Sheeny even chimed in to give it a bit of a shot while Jayo was working on it at Freeform’s training location on an even bigger ramp set up than we saw at Nitro World Games.

But it was still so big, with so much chance for instant death that the guys managed to work out how the Moon Booter could be adjusted to make it happen.

The two guys who are competing against each other and the history books then trained together at Harry Bink’s 5060 compound on the Gold Coast in Australia to try work out exactly how to get the 3 full rotations into the BigAirBag Air Pit. This huge pillow of air still can hurt when you come down wrong, but it allows the riders the ability to continually keep trying the trick with so much less risk than a Foam Pit or, simply going to hard dirt.

Taking the advice and some parts from Levi Sherwood who must really be thanked as well for helping to expand the sport to this point, the guys were ready.

So with Nitro World Games in Brisbane, Australia ready to go, these 2 warriors defied all odds and landed the first ever FMX Competition Triple Flips.

What were they up against?

In a competition – when it’s your time to ride, you have to go. Even if you’re not feeling it
Pressure of thousands in the crowd and millions watching around the world
Waiting almost 30 minutes for the team to get the ramp into place, while you’re trying to stay composed
2 days earlier having the event postponed due to rain. Sitting and waiting does not help nerves or anxiety
1 month earlier Harry rebroke his ribs which were broken in an X Games crash 3 months earlier
Jayo coming back from a broken femur from simply landing in the airbag while training for the Triple.

So how did it happen?

At Nitro World Games in the final event of the night being Freestyle Motocross Best Trick, 5 riders had already attempted or landed their best tricks. And now it was time for Jayo Archer and Harry Bink to attempt the Triple Flip.

Jayo’s name was first on the order, so he had all the pressure to try the triple onto the airbag landing for the first time. No one had attempted it, only onto the Flat foam pit style Air Pit.

Jayo rolled in with the weight of the world on his shoulders and pulled the Triple Flip clean as a whistle and only just bobbling a little on the landing with a bit of an airbag bounce, but he rode it out. First attempt!

With all of the celebrations going on, it was another 15 minutes before Harry Bink would land it. With advertising breaks and interviews, Harry asked for 2 warm-up jumps where he did 2 Double Flips, holding the rotation as long as possible and stalling his body out.

On his first attempt, he was looking good but unfortunately washed out. Bent the front end a little bit but was otherwise ok! Somehow he crashed a Triple Flip and survived to try again. After getting the bike straight enough to jump again, he stomped the second Triple Flip absolutely perfectly!

While he required 4 bites of the cherry before landing it, Harry Bink won the event with 99 / 100 score and Jayo Archer on 98.33 / 100.

But with history made, Jayo was the first rider to land it and receiving the Lego Innovation Award, both riders on the same night landing and Harry taking the win. Jayo won even more, by proposing to his long-time girlfriend Beth and getting ‘Yes’ as the answer.

Other than splitting first place two ways, it was a fairytale ending to what could have been a nightmare scenario if anything went wrong. This is still one of the most dangerous things we have ever seen in any action sport. And somehow, in one night, two riders landed it and survived to see another day.

So I filmed some short clips, sent it through to Clint Esposito since we couldn’t do a live cross and he put together all the FMX clips into one YouTube clip above.

Lost in the Jungle! Short clip from Crazy Action Sports Stories

All I could see in my mind, was a newspaper headline saying “Idiot Australian lost in Indonesia Jungle”

What started as a disaster on my first ever FMX Tour of Indonesia, turned into a really cool opportunity to go riding in the jungle to the top of a volcano with Sheeny and Clinton Moore. And then almost back to disaster again!

This is a short clip from when I joined Clint Esposito’s new segment, Crazy Action Sports Stories for the Two Wheels to Freedom channel.

We did a video interview where I joined him to tell my one stupid / crazy story and thought I’d clip it for you guys to listen here as Audio Only.

Adelberg creates history at X Games 2022 with Frontie to Frontie – Full Review of Moto X

History has been made in X Games Moto this year with Jacko Strong landing the first ever 110ft Front Flip, before Rob Adelberg bested it with the first ever Front Flip to Front Flip in a line (Next Gen ramp into 110ft ramp) to blow everyone’s mind.

Guillem Navas broke the Quarter Pipe Highest Air record on his first jump of the competition but by the end of the comp, Colby Raha set a new record of 49 feet 0 inches!

And Julien Vanstippen just unleashed one of the biggest whips we’ve ever seen on a 110ft ramp by going completely upside down, inside out and back to front!

X Games is still delivering huge moments in FMX history, and we go into who was invited, who wasn’t. Who won. Who lost. Who crashed their brains out and who created history.

Ackermann wins XKnights over Sheeny and Taka in Costa Rica

After a two-year break forced by COVID-19, this weekend the emotions of the X-Knights returned to the “jewel” of La Sabana.

Close to 40,000 fans experienced up close the emotions and tricks of the riders in the FMX and BMX modalities.

Six riders on motorcycles and five on bikes managed to win over the public by offering a world-class event.

The German Luc Ackermann managed to be crowned champion in the FMX modality , he does it for the second time after having also won in 2019.

The final was played by the young German together with the Australian Josh Sheehan and the Japanese Taka Higashino.

In BMX, the young Englishman Kieran Reilly stood out with his debut and victory , who obtained outstanding scores from the previous qualifying rounds. Second place went to Costa Rican Kenneth Tencio, who made a small mistake in the final round that took away important points.

For the first time, the event had “airbag landings”, which eliminated the use of land on the circuit , in addition, the risk decreases for the pilots and it does not depend so much on the weather.

Best Trick: X Games 2021 Review 5/6

It’s time for the big one! Best Trick is the event we wait for every year to see what everyone has been working on, and after last years hiatus, I think it’s fair to assume everyone was really looking forward to this event since the guys had effectively 2 years to hone their tricks!

And it looked like only David Rinaldo was willing to bring something completely new to the game with his new body varial, called the Bobby Spin, which is dedicated to his friend Francky Bataille.

But it was Rob Adelberg’s No Handed Front Flip which won the competition, with David taking silver and Harry Bink in 3rd spot with his new Double Backflip 1 Hand Nac.

Very controversial it would seem, and we have 8 different opinions in this episode and I can’t thank the guys for joining enough because this was harder to pick than a dirty nose! Thanks Clint Esposito, Antonio Navas, Javier Villegas Andy Christie, FMX_Grizz, Kevin Peterson, DannyDwayne416

Adam Jones gives his wrap-up of the Freestyle Motocross competition in the latest Riders Lounge Podcast episode and gave one of the biggest compliments I think any rider would want to hear from a fellow rider!

Luc Ackermann took the gold medal at X Games, but I think this badge of honour has been coming for a while, so it was cool to hear Adam saying what he thinks.

X Games 2021 Best Whip : Review 3/6

The motocross discipline which measures style over anything else, returned to X Games 2021 with Best Whip and there was a huge shake-up in the results with surprise eliminations and a very deserving winner!

Tom Parsons brought the heat with some of the biggest whips ever done on a dirt bike, and he took the win over Wanky (Genki Watanabe) who has some of the best Turn Down whips as well.

The only problem is, you’re comparing apples and oranges. Speaking of apples, the Apple Farmer from Donnybrook, Josh Sheehan missed out on the Final 4 even after throwing some huge whips and a favourite for the event with more Gold Medals in Best Whip than anyone else, Jarryd McNeil also didn’t make the cut for the final which was a huge shock!

We cover all of that, plus the new course featuring a Double-Double line and then choices of ramps on the second jump, the invites (and riders who weren’t invited), the judging and everything else to do with Best Whip this year.

Joining us again for this episode is the man from Team Lleides, Antonio Navas, as well as one of Australia’s brightest stars for Best Whip in particular and a guy I think deserves a shot at X Games Best Whip next year, Tyler Wakeford who gives really good insights into each of the styles of whip including the traditional Seat Bounce Racer whip, Turn Downs and Turn Ups. Returning with the fan evaluation is FMX old timer who still gives it a red hot go, Andy Christie, FMX Grizz from the UK and a new voice from one of our listeners from the Podcast, Dani_FMX.

Rounding out this episode, we have again the legend of Freestyle Motocross, one of the true pioneers of the sport and another guy who missed an invite for 2021, Edgar Torronteras. Edgar has won Gold in X Games Best Whip, he’s been on the podium a handful of times, yet still missed a shot this year.

X Games 2021 FMX : Review 2/6

X Games Freestyle Moto is one of the most important and longest running motocross discipline in the ESPN stables. In 2021, it didn’t disappoint and there was so much going on, that it gave us plenty to talk about here!

From the difficult course bugging out most riders, the judging, the crashes and even what time everyone must have had to wake up to even ride this event!

From Luc’s incredible win, to Sheeny’s impressive run, Adelberg’s mistake that cost him potentially a win and David Rinaldo landing an all new trick! Bink and Benny Richards took dirt samples and couldn’t finish and Taka was perfect like always and Jacko made some big mistakes which we didn’t expect! X Games had it all!!!

We’re joined again by X Games Gold Medallist in Freestyle 2007, Adam Jones who knows more about this event than almost anyone else in the world!

el Presidente Antonio Navas returns with his views on the competition, plus Chris ‘Rocket’ Rose as a track builder to talk about the difficult course and Jose Gaspar as a former X Games judge to highlight points the judges would have been looking for.

We have even more fan interaction with FMX Grizz returning, and joined by an old FMX friend of mine, Andy Christie who isn’t scared to ride ramps on a CR500 if given the chance.
