Huge whips, upside down, back to front, dropping the front end so hard and coming back without even a puff of smoke or an engine rev.His whips would not have looked out of place at X Games Best Whip if I was honest. Becoming South Africa's top FMX rider with Dallan Goldman from King of the Whip 2022

After finally meeting Dallan after so many years, it was great to grab a quick 5 minute chat with him before he was about to throw down at King of the Whip and see if he could stand on top of the box at the end of the night.

During our chat though, I was surprised when he dropped the bombshell that he was considering quitting FMX because of the backflip monkey on his back. And this is no joke. The backflip has ended the career of many riders. Of guys who couldn’t land it. And worse, those who crashed out badly. No one will know how hard it is until they deal with this themselves and really look at how dangerous it is.

And what is great, after putting in all of the work and backing himself, Dallan has been rewarded with being South Africa’s number 1 FMX rider and being invited to some of the coolest events like KING of the Whip.

Normally a Best Whip competition is just a small side act, of a bigger Freestyle Motocross competition or Motocross / Supercross race.

How did Ryan van der Spuy manage to bring the best riders in South Africa and now international riders like Julien Vanstippen (X Games gold medallist) to try out this crazy new event idea from the best FMX riders, MX, SX and even Enduro racers!?

The entire show blew me away and I was also very pumped to host the show for 2022 at Montecasino!

The hard part from all of this – how will they go even bigger for 2023?

King of the Whip 2022 Wows Thousands of Dirt Bike Fans at Montecasino

The 2022 Edition of the King of the Whip – Best Whip Contest, presented by LW Mag and Pringles in association with Monster Energy, Yamaha, Garmin, Motul and Estrella Cerveza was a resounding triumph.

30 Freestyle Motocross and Motocross riders from all over the country competed in the Best Whip and Best Trick competitions. The venue, Montecasino, was sold out, with 5,000 stoked spectators enjoying the wild show of the riders throwing massive whips.

“This event started as a small event five years ago at a quarry,” said event organiser Ryan Van Der Spuy. “It has been incredible to see the event grow into what it now is and to witness the excitement from both the riders and spectators.”

It was high action from the outset, with each rider going bigger and more extreme with each attempt through the earlier rounds. With judges taking style, amplitude and variation into account, 14 riders qualified through to the semi-finals that would see them battle it out for a Top 8 spot to advance to the final. As the sun started going down and the lighting started filling up the Montecasino events arena, it was time for the big tricks.

In the FMX Best Trick contests, Dallan Goldman took the Right-Side-Up win and the R10,000 first prize with his 1-Hand 9 O’Clock Nic Indi (Airplane Indy), followed by Julien Vanstippen’s Holygrab to Double Hart Attack in 2nd and Michael Oyston’s Dead Body Indy in 3rd.

And, in the Upside-Down segment Julien Vanstippen took the win and the R20,000 first prize with his huge Ruler Indy Backflip ahead of Dallan Goldman with a Backflip Indy in 2nd.

“Having an event like King of the Whip in South Africa is exactly what this country and sport needs,” said Goldman. “Ryan Van Der Spuy has done an awesome job setting this venue up and ensuring that all the riders are here. I just see King Of The Whip getting bigger and bigger, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we start selling out some stadiums soon. The potential for this event is massive.”

Then it was time for the big whips in the Best Whip contest final that saw Jesse Wright, Dallan Goldman, Dirco van der Westhuizen, Matt van Galen, Dalton Venter, Ricky Raaff, Ryan Adler and Julien Vanstippen take to the air.
With each rider pushing hard, and the crowds roaring in excitement on each jump. Some of the inverted jumps were hard to believe, but the riders recovered from what looked like some impossibly tweaked whips to land safely and successfully.

The Best Whip event, the premier division of the evening, was won by the current X-Games Best Whip gold medallist, Belgium’s Julien Vanstippen who showcases some of the biggest whips the world has ever seen. Dallan Goldman, who has podiumed at every King of the Whip event, was runner-up, and Jesse Wright’s ability to whip big both ways saw him claim 3rd.

“Everyone was riding so good, so it was hard to do better than them, but yeah, good times for all,” said a jubilant Vanstippen. “For sure, I will come back for this event. I think more people will want to get involved in this event, train harder, and see bigger whips in the future. So next time we will come for a month and then go down to Cape Town to party. Let’s go!”

King of the Whip is back!

After being put on hold for the past two years, LW Mag is excited to announce that King of the Whip – Best Whip Contest, presented by Pringles in association with Monster Energy, Yamaha, Garmin, Motul and Estrella Cerveza, is back!

On the 19th of November 2022 this adrenaline fuelled Action Sports event moves to its new home in Montecasino. Witness top Motocross and Freestyle Motocross athletes battling it out to for a share of the prize purse and to see who’ll be crowned King of the Whip.

Doors open at 2pm with proceedings set to kick off at 4pm and continue into the evening as the final showdown takes place under the night lights and flashes of pyrotechnics. Riders will be pitted against each other in the Best Whip qualifying jam session rounds where judges will be looking for style, amplitude and variation. Riders that score high enough points will advance to the semi-finals and finals.

King of the Whip 2022 will also showcase the FMX Best Trick contest with both right-side up and up-side down categories.
The R100 000 cash prize purse will be split between 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Best Whip contest, and between the 1st place riders in the FMX Best Trick contests.

Two international riders have stepped up to that plate and will be making their way to South Africa to compete against the local heroes. Current X-Games Best Whip gold medallist and Freestyle Motocross star, Belgium’s Julien Vanstippen, is excited to put on a show for the fans while looking to claim another gold medal.

USA’s Patrick Evans is ridiculously skilled in all forms of Dirt Bike riding from Racing to Freestyle Motocross and is ready to take on the challenge on African soil.

King of the Whip organiser, Ryan van der Spuy says, “We are extremely excited to be back! It has been a long two years waiting in anticipation to bring King of the Whip back to its fans, and now we are finally live. King of the Whip has grown into its own spectacle, and being able to host the event at Montecasino takes it to the next level. We can’t wait for the showdown and to share this exciting production with both the riders and fans. A huge thank you to our event partners for making this possible and enabling our top riders to showcase their skills.”

Whip (Noun):
A maneuver performed on a motorcycle, usually during a motocross or freestyle motocross contest, in which the rider brings the rear of the motorcycle abruptly around to either side. Performed while the machine is airborne off a jump. In very extreme whips, the rear of the motorcycle will end up perpendicular to the direction of travel, in addition to the motorcycle being laid flat. The purpose of the whip is to show off, to alter the trajectory of the bike in flight, and to scrub speed over jumps.
